A ranging date that looks comfortable in October can be closed by late January. Chinese New Year, and the plant shutdown around it, sits inside the lead time for ambient and frozen imported grocery. The public holiday is short. Many factories are quiet for longer.
Written for supermarket category managers, private-label and controlled-brand managers, and QSR or foodservice buyers. Shiiv Imports Pty Ltd trades as Shiiv Imports. We are a sourcing agent, importer and private-label builder, not a manufacturer. The partner plant holds the production diary and the plant certifications. We place those shutdown dates next to lead time, minimum order and the first warehouse drop.
The next long window is early 2027
Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. The statutory break is shorter than the time many plants actually stop. Sites often wind down one to two weeks before the holiday, and a normal slot may not return until one to three weeks after. Those are planning bands, not a promise that every factory follows. The date in the ranging pack is the one the plant writes down for that site.
Count backwards from the warehouse date you need. A known maker, a familiar pack and a shorter ocean leg can still sit near 90 days from a locked brief to the first shelf-ready order, before any shutdown is added. Leave the order too late and you miss the last sailing before the holiday. How that clock is built is in from sample to first PO, and the ordinary band is in the lead-time FAQ.
Other calendars that move a slot
Chinese New Year is the long closure for many plants in China. Tet in Vietnam falls on the same lunar date, so a nearby origin can be shut in the same week. Do not treat it as cover until the dates are in writing.
Shorter windows still move a slot. China's National Day holiday begins on 1 October. The official break is shorter than Chinese New Year, though a plant may still close around it. Diwali in India moves each year. Songkran in Thailand sits in mid-April. In some years Ramadan and the Eid holidays that follow fall close to Chinese New Year. European plants often close between Christmas and early January.
Ask for the load port as well as the factory gate. Frozen grocery also needs a reefer. If the first sailings after the holiday are taken, ex-factory and on-water are not the same week. Many South-East Asian origins into an Australian east-coast port are often a fortnight to four weeks port to port. South Asian origins are commonly longer.
Put the shutdown on the lead-time line
Write five dates, in order: last production day, first day the line is offered again, ex-factory, load port, and warehouse drop. If a date is still to be confirmed, say so.
Artwork written to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code still has to be signed before print. A late allergen or origin change sends the file back into a queue already full of pre-holiday orders. Approve the words, then book the slot. Own-brand adds that gate. A branded line from the catalogue can sometimes finish on a label check, so the two paths should not share one calendar.
MOQ changes when the slot is scarce
The last runs before a closure are often the ones the plant wants to fill. A quiet-month minimum can rise while the site batches orders, holds labour or clears packaging. A very small first order can be harder to place than a run the plant can plan. How minimums work is in flexible MOQs.
Ask, in writing, for the minimum before shutdown and on the first slot after it, and whether a foodservice pack has its own minimum. If a QSR carton and a retail jar share the line, say which one must ship before the closure.
If the bay has to stay in stock through the closure and the next voyage, the goods need to be in the warehouse already, or on a vessel you have named. Ambient pantry (rice, dry snacks, shelf-stable sauces, biscuits) can bridge the gap when remaining shelf life still meets the warehouse rule. Frozen lines need cold store, a reefer matched to the ex-factory week, and a warehouse that can receive frozen that day. Ask for two calendars when one brief covers both.
A second plant only helps if its calendar differs
A second site helps when it can make the agreed product while the primary plant is shut. It does not help if it stops the same week. Readiness means a named site, a known audit scope, and a lead time and minimum already priced. What belongs in that file is in why category managers ask for a second plant. A backup that still needs a sample and a first lot will not rescue a February date if that work starts in January.
Where a partner holds a GFSI-benchmarked scheme (BRCGS, SQF, FSSC 22000 and others), the certificate applies to a named site and a named scope. HACCP and similar food-safety plans live at the maker. Partners hold those certifications. Shiiv Imports does not claim to be GFSI-certified, and we are not the factory. Shiiv holds an ISO 9001 quality system for how we source, select suppliers, watch production and handle recalls. It is not a plant food-safety certificate. The distinction sits on quality and compliance.
If origin changes on the cover order, the "made in" and "packed in" lines on an Australian pack may have to change too. Agree that artwork before the pre-holiday print, on a private-label file or on the branded pack. We do not name major-chain private-label clients.
A short checklist before you lock the date
Add these lines to the brief, next to product, pack, channel and volume:
- Last production day and first resumed slot, in writing, for this site.
- Whether packaging, ingredients or labour close earlier than the kitchen.
- Ex-factory, load port, discharge port and warehouse drop. List ambient and frozen separately if both are in the brief.
- Minimum order before the closure, and on the first slot after it.
- Whether a second plant is already qualified, and whether its holiday is the same week.
- Remaining shelf life on arrival for ambient goods, and the cold-chain handoff for frozen goods.
- Who signs artwork if origin or allergen practice changes on the cover order.
Private-label briefs already carry tier, channel and volume. Add the shutdown dates to that file.
Send product, pack, channel, the warehouse date and any holiday you already know through a sourcing brief, or a private-label brief if the pack is own-brand. We reply the same business day with indicative pricing, order sizes, lead times and how the quality pack is shared under NDA. Indicative is not a binding quote. Email sales@shiv-impex.com. Teams sit in Sydney, Auckland, Singapore and Ahmedabad.
